Welcome to the Calgary Yacht Club
| Welcome to the start of a new sailing season and a year that will likely prove to be a turning point in the history of the CYC. If the recent spate of warm weather is any indication then in contrast to 2009 we may be in for an early break up. It is a pleasure once again to have the ongoing privilege of being the Commodore and representing the interests of the membership of the Calgary Yacht Club.
We are looking forward to another ambitious season at the CYC. While our boats have been in the midst of their winter slumber there has been a considerable of activity going on in the background. The membership owes a debt of gratitude to the hard working committee members and staff that have been working diligently over the winter to ensure that the short summer season can be enjoyed to the fullest.
There is every indication that the CYC Masters group will continue to prosper and grow this season. If you haven't yet joined in I encourage you to find out more about the program. At the other end of the spectrum early numbers show that the Youth Opti program from age 4 and up will be quite busy this year. The club will be offering a range of instruction and coaching for all ages and experience.
The Building Committee has been successful in its application for a grant to help pay for the cost of the new clubhouse. Many thanks to our local MLA, Rob Anderson, and to the Alberta Government for their support to this worthwhile community project. In addition to varied other sources of funding, the grant has put the club into a position where we can actively proceed with the final planning of the new clubhouse. You can expect to see more news as we progress toward tearing down the old clubhouse in September.
On the topic of construction; we need all be aware that to move ahead with construction there will be considerable disruption to normal club activity after the summer season. It is likely that most of the current boat storage space will need to be emptied for the winter but arrangements have been made for alternative storage nearby on Phil Paxton's tree farm located about 2.5 km. south of the club. Member activity on club property during the construction process will be severely limited due to the presence of heavy machinery, felling trees and open pits. It's a case of short term pain for long term gain, so please bear with us and if you have any concerns be sure to bring it to my attention. Your cooperation is appreciated.
I understand the Spring Flotilla on the west coast is once again fully subscribed and we have sailors attending regattas in California and already scheduled to attend events in Ontario, British Columbia, Montana and Oregon. Be sure to bring home a burgee for our growing collection, if you need a CYC trader, let Fie know where you are going and she can help you out.
Until we meet, stay safe, stay fit and get ready for a great 2010 season!
